Instructional Services Willamette ESD Driver Education Program Driver Education Services are offered to school districts through a collaborative venture between Willamette ESD and Oregon Driver Education Center (ODEC). The program is available to districts on a state-wide basis and includes a minimum of 30 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction and 6 hours of in-car observation. Grades are pass or fail. Each driving lesson begins with an overview of the lesson plan and goals. The lessons follow designated routes designed to challenge the student and cover high accident areas. Driving lessons cover Residential, Parking & Backing, City, Freeway, Country and a Final Evaluation. The Oregon Department of Transportation has approved this program, as well as each instructor who must also be a licensed teacher. Courses are offered year-round. For students to participate in the program they must possess a valid Oregon instructional permit. Licensed drivers do not qualify for the program. Mission To provide quality education and training that exceeds the requirements set forth by the State of Oregon, both in the classroom and behind the wheel. Dedicated to delivering the individualized instruction necessary to ensure the successful completion of the course and equip the student with the defensive driving skills needed to navigate safely in different driving conditions. Funding Funding for the program comes from two sources. Each participating student pays a tuition fee, and the Oregon Department of Transportation reimburses Willamette ESD for each student that has successfully completed the program. There is no cost to the school district other than providing a classroom and a television with a VCR. Interesting Facts Statistics suggest that 70% of young drivers will be involved in a crash prior to their 19th birthday. The goal of the program is to eliminate preventable accidents. Preventable accidents are different than “legally-at-fault accidents!” A driver may not be legally at fault for an accident, but if they could have avoided the collision by applying defensive driving tactics, the accident was preventable.
