Instructional Services
Rick Hanson, Director of Instructional Services

The Instructional Services Department provides leadership and instructional support to foster equitable educational opportunities that will help all learners achieve Oregon's educational goals and become positive, contributing participants in their communities.

Willamette ESD Instructional Services Department provides leadership and service in a variety of programs throughout Marion, Polk and Yamhill counties.

Attendance Services

Attendance Services is a program focused on helping our partnering districts reach and recover students with chronic attendance problems.

Driver Education

Driver Education Services are offered to school districts through a collaborative venture between Willamette ESD and Oregon Driver Education Center. The program is available to districts on a state-wide basis and includes a minimum of 30 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction and 6 hours of in-car observation. Grades are pass or fail. Each driving lesson begins with an overview of the lesson plan and goals. The lessons follow designated routes designed to challenge the student and cover high accident areas. Driving lessons cover Residential, Parking & Backing, City, Freeway, Country and a Final Evaluation.

Home School

The Willamette Education Service District (WESD) is responsible for registering students in Marion, Polk and Yamhill Counties whose parents or guardians intend to educate their children at home.  In addition, the WESD provides general information about home schooling. 

Professional Development Services

Professional Development Services (PDS) provides high quality professional growth opportunities for WESD staff, constituent school districts, other agencies and interested organizations in the state of Oregon.

Oregon After School for Kids (OregonASK)

Oregon ASK is a collaboration of public and private organizations and community members which seek to address common issues and concerns across all out-of-school time services--child care, recreation, education and youth development.               

Safe Schools/Healthy Students

The ESD Safe Schools/Healthy Students Program provides a variety of safety related assessment and support services to rural schools in Marion, Polk and Yamhill County school districts. This program also provides prevention and targeted intervention services for children and youth and their families in rural Marion, Polk and Yamhill Counties.

Second Solution

The Second Solution GED prep program assists youth ages 16-19 to earn a GED, as well as to set and achieve appropriate post-high school goals. The mission of the program is to assist youth to reach their goal of high school completion and to learn about post high school education/career opportunities.

Student Leadership Development Center

The Student Leadership Development Center (SLDC) provides state leadership for the seven professional technical student leadership organizations in Oregon. These organization serve as a vehicle to help students achieve academic and career related learning standards. Through the center's work, students have local, state and national opportunities to develop and enhance their academic, leadership, citizenship and career skills.

Youth Education Programs

The education programs at Hillcrest, MacLaren Youth Correctional Facilities and the Oregon State Hospital are managed by the Instructional Services Department. Approximately 500 youth, ages 12-25 receive education services at these locations.

Youth Opportunity Grant

The Youth Opportunity Grant is a federally funded grant focused on offering opportunity for juvenile offenders to seek out post secondary education and training.

WIA Welders Program

The Workforce Education Leads to Direct Employment of Reliable Steelworkers (WELDERS) program trains students in the skills necessary to compete successfully in the local manufacturing industry.
