Data Warehouse

In response to the growing need of districts to meet the requirements of No Child Left Behind, the Willamette ESD has developed a data warehouse enabling educators to compare data from various sources. The intent of the data warehouse is to provide school district administrators with a tool they can use to not only monitor the current conditions of their district but also to analyze data to determine patterns in enrollment, attendance, and discipline. Administrators view the data through a Dashboard, a software tool that provides multi-dimensional graphical views of data in a user-friendly format.

Monitoring Student Performance for AYP

Two key indicators for AYP are student academic performance on Oregon State Assessments in mathematics and reading and daily attendance. Throughout the school year, scores students receive on Oregon State Assessments are imported into the Data Warehouse allowing districts to monitor student progress in meeting performance standards. Assessment scores are disaggregated by the subgroups represented on AYP. Along with assessment data, the dashboards provide up-to-date information on attendance.

Using Dashboards in the School Improvement Process

Currently, Dashboards are available in four areas: Academic Performance, Attendance, Discipline, and Enrollment & Demographics. Each of these dashboards provides data that can be used to determine areas of concern on which school improvement efforts can be focused and to provide a means to track the effectiveness of implementation.

Filters are provided allowing districts to disaggregate data to meet their individual needs. Historical student and assessment data is imported into the data warehouse to allow districts can to look for patterns and determine trends in student performance and behavior.

Data from a district’s student information system is imported into the data warehouse nightly, allowing districts to access current information on student demographics, discipline, and attendance. This allows administrators to identify issues and intervene in a timely manner.

In addition to providing summary information, administrators can “drill-down” to access a list of students that make up a metric, such as a list of students that “almost meet” an academic performance standard, or students with unexcused absences.
