Supplemental Instructional Suport

Reading, Math, English Language Development, native language instruction, etc., are provided so that students meet state standards.

Support Services

Support services that facilitate migrant student attendance/participation in school such as emergency dental, vision, medical, clothing, etc. in collaboration with other agencies are provided.

Student Enrichment Opportunities

Through the Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) grant, three book distributions are held during the regular school year serving all of Region 16. Bilingual books are offered when available. Other services include participation in the César E. Chávez Leadership Conference, and the Oregon Hispanic & Migrant Student Leadership Institute.

Identification & Recruitment Efforts

The lead recruiter is responsible for spearheading identification and recruitment efforts across the six counties region.

All migrant staff members are trained to recruit at their local sites. The Lead Recruiter provides assistance throughout the six counties. Flyers are distributed at different places such as stores, laundromats, churches, etc. Monthly meetings for recruiters are held, which also include current educational topics and issues of interest and concern.

Parent Involvement

At the regional level, a Parent Advisory Committee is composed of parent representation from the participating LEAs. The Region 16 Parent Advisory Committee meets on a monthly basis. Parent Involvement is mandated by law under the migrant program.

What educational services are provided in the Migrant Education Program?

The following services are those most generally provided:

  • Supplemental instructional support in reading, math, English Language Development, native language instruction, etc.
  • Preschool programs designed to prepare migrant children for a successful school experience and transition into kindergarten.
  • Credit Recovery
  • Assistance to secondary-age students with scholarships, applications, grants, etc.
  • GED/Secondary Programs
  • Intercultural education that develops skills of cultural appreciation, understanding and conflict resolution.
  • The Annual Cesar Chavez Student Leadership Conference
  • The Oregon Migrant Student Leadership Institute
  • Summer Enrichment School programs to supplement the regular school program.
  • Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) – Every migrant child participates in 5 separate book distributions and selects free books to take home.
  • SHARE – a literacy promotion partnership with MACY’s stores. Students receive 2 books purchased with SHARE funds.
