Oregon Mentoring Program
Based on research, the Oregon Mentoring Program is a proven way to help increase the number of teachers and principals that successfully stay in the profession. The significant impact of a well trained educator is powerful.
Requirements
School districts have the option to participate in the mentoring program. This year, interested districts signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which was sent out in late spring. School districts were not able to participate if they did not submit an MOU prior to the deadline. New teachers, administrators, and superintendant's are eligible to participate so long as they meet the requirements. Eligibility is based upon the new teacher, administrator, or superintendant being in their first or second year in the position, and having a valid Teachers Standards Practices Commission (TSPC) license.
Special Thanks
The Oregon Mentoring Program would not have been possible if it were not for the assistance of participating school district staff from around the state, Stand for Children, the Chalkboard Project, and Bev Pratt, from ODE, for contacting and meeting with the Oregon State Legislature. We would like to thank all of you for your dedication to making education better.
The New Teacher Center
The New Teacher Center at the University of California at Santa Cruz provides training for the mentors. There are trainings scheduled for teacher mentors (both first and second year mentors), administrative mentor trainings (CLASS), and specialized sessions for English Language Learners (ELL). Mentors are trained in blended coaching strategies that match today’s needs in classrooms and schools.
