Special Programs Yamhill Life Skills Services The goal of the Life Skills Program is to provide a variety of opportunities and experiences to facilitate greater independence in all of the enrolled students. The Kindergarten through Post-High Life Skills Programs serve approximately 90 students with multiple disabilities. The program provides a small educational environment focused on teaching functional life skills applicable in daily life. The curriculum of each program focuses on teaching functional academics, providing community training, vocational opportunities, social skill development, and language development. There are currently 9 programs in Yamhill County. Who is eligible? The decision to place a student in a Life Skills Program is an IEP team decision. To be eligible to be considered for a Life Skills Program the student would need to present significant cognitive delays which necessitate learning in a small, self-contained environment. All of the students in the program have identified disabilities such as mental retardation, autism spectrum disorder, speech/language impairment, orthopedic impairment, and other health impairment. In order to be considered for placement into the Life Skills Program, the resident district special education director (or designee) completes a referral to WESD-Yamhill Center. A meeting is scheduled with the student’s family (and student as appropriate). At the meeting, the student’s learning goals are discussed and the team determines if the Life Skills Program would be an appropriate placement for the student given their needs. What Services are Provided to Students and their Families? The program provides individualized services to students based on identified needs, and therefore may include the following services
