Braille and Large Print Textbook Production
Oregon Textbook and Media Center (OTMC)

OTMC is a state and federally funded center serving all regional programs, the Oregon School for the Blind, the Oregon School for the Deaf, and the Oregon Commission for the Blind. Students served by the above mentioned programs must be eligible as a student with vision impairment as identified in the Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR 581-15-051 & 581-015-293). OTMC provides textbooks and supplementary materials in a format selected to match individual student needs (Braille, large print, or audio recordings). The supplementary materials may include, but is not all inclusive to Braillers, recorders, paper, rulers, abacus, and computer software. For younger students, equipment include toys and manipulatives to support concept development and pre-reading skills.

Books and materials available from OTMC are obtained one of three ways. 1. OTMC receives Federal Quota money. A per student dollar amount is received based on the number of eligible students with vision impairments in regional programs statewide. The money is then used to purchase books, materials, and equipment from the American Printing House for the Blind. The money can’t be used to purchase materials from other sources. OTMC purchases the materials at the request of the regional programs. The materials are housed at OTMC and available for checkout through the regional teacher of students with vision impairments. Materials are selected for use with an individual student and their educational team. 2. OTMC acquires Braille and large print textbooks from around the country. A search is conducted to determine if the book is already available in the format desired (Braille, large print, audio). If the book is available, OTMC purchases the book and delivers the book to the student’s regional vision teacher. 3. If a search determines the book is not available, OTMC, will reproduce the book in the correct format. OTMC does not produce audio recordings. OTMC produces Braille and large print books.

The center is administered by the Willamette Education Service District. OTMC is housed at the 2600 location.  It is open from 8:00 4:00 weekdays year round, except holidays, Christmas Break, and Spring Break.
