In order to assure a safe environment for staff students and visitors, WESD has implemented a radon testing program. Testing will be conducted at the eight different sites where WESD has an operational presence. Radon testing measures the background levels of radon in rooms that are in are in contact with the ground, as statutorily required in ORS 332.166-167. All radon testing must be completed on or before January 1, 2021. The statute also requires districts to submit test data to the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) and to share test results with the district’s community.
OHA Radon Guidelines
The OHA has set an action level of 4 pCi/L (picoCuries per liter) for schools and educational settings. If classrooms or buildings have radon levels at 4 pCi/L EPA recommends that school administrators take action to reduce the level. Those actions would include a retest to confirm the presence of radon, and then the implementation of dilution ventilation.
If the initial tests find radon levels less than 2.0 pCi/L, OHA and the ORS 332.166-167 only requires retesting every 10 years.

WESD Radon Test Results
Testing has been completed at the WESD Marion Center and the Early Childhood Center. Analysis was completed by Wise Steps, Inc. Industrial Hygiene and Safety Consulting of Salem, Oregon. No rooms showed a presence of radon that exceeded 2.0 pCi/L. The full results can be requested using the link below.
